Living Systems Institute

Fellowships

Information for prospective fellowship candidates

In the Living Systems Institute (LSI) we nurture interdisciplinary scientists who apply physical and quantitative approaches to uncover fundamental principles of how living systems self-organise and function. We welcome expressions of interest in joining the Institute as a fellow, whether transitioning to independence or leading your first independent research group.

Early-career fellowships support awardees to undertake research in a host laboratory. Candidates require a host PI in LSI who agrees to provide space, resources and mentorship. Endorsement is also required from the Institute Director, Prof Austin Smith. Please contact your prospective host directly in the first instance.

Early-career fellowship schemes that you may be eligible to apply for include:

Please note that additional internal processes apply for some schemes. For summary information on these and other fellowship schemes please .

Group leader opportunities in interdisciplinary life science

Are you ready to establish your own research programme at the interface between the physical and life sciences?

We support talented scientists to secure fellowship funding to investigate fundamental processes of living systems and translation to human health.

Candidates will have a research vision that is original, ambitious, and interdisciplinary. You will have a record of accomplishment from PhD and post-doctoral research and will propose a defined project that is internationally competitive for fellowship funding. Your Expression of Interest should also outline the complementarity and potential synergy with LSI research themes and other 91传媒 researchers.

Following shortlisting and interview, successful candidates will be supported and mentored in applications for external fellowship funding. Upon securing a fellowship you will establish your research group in the LSI, benefiting from a unique interdisciplinary environment with outstanding facilities and colleagues, mentorship, access to intra-mural funding, support for commercial translation, opportunities to recruit undergraduate and postgraduate students. You will also hold an affiliation to the relevant University Department (Mathematics & Statistics; Physics & Astronomy; Computer Sciences; Engineering; Biosciences; Clinical and Biomedical Sciences) providing further opportunities for networking and mentorship. During the period of a Group Leader Fellowship, you may be reviewed for progression to an open-ended University appointment.

Whilst all applicants will be judged on merit alone, we particularly welcome applications from groups currently underrepresented within our research community. Please note the application and interview process applies equally to 91传媒 internal candidates and external applicants.

To apply, please complete this and merge it into a single file along with:

    • A two-page summary of your proposed research programme
    • A two-page CV
    • A full publication list

Please submit your full application by email to infolsi@exeter.ac.uk with the subject heading FELLOWSHIPS. Applications will be reviewed monthly, and long-listed candidates will be invited to visit LSI to present and discuss research interests with members of the Institute. For short-listed candidates, interviews will take place in January and June.

If you would like to discuss this opportunity informally, please contact the Institute Director Professor Austin Smith (austin.smith@exeter.ac.uk).
